THE CHROMOSOME, HOW IT'S AFFECTED, AND HOW IT'S PASSED DOWN

  • The affected chromosome is the eleventh chromosome, sickle cell disease in particular is a disorder in the hemoglobin-beta gene.

NATURE OF THE DISORDER

  • Sign/symptoms
  • Pain In bones or joints, is sudden in chest.
  • Mostly Africans, Greeks, Turks, Italians, Arabians, And Hispanics are Affected by the disease. Also affects 70,000 - 80,000 Americans.

LIFE EXPECTANCY

  • For males it is usually to 42 and females to 48. But if males have hemoglobin C they live to 60 and females 68.
