WHO WAS MY EXPLORER?
Ernest Shackleton was born on February 15, 1874 in Ireland.
He became a sailor and joined the Navy when he was 16 years old.
When Ernest Shackleton was 24 he was a certified master mariner.
He died on January 5, 1922.
He was smart and loved reading.
He dreamed of being rich and tried to start many businesses.

WHAT DID ERNEST SHACKLETON DO?
Ernest was a British leader and a polar explorer who led British expedition teams to Antarctica.
Ernest tried 4 times to get to the South Pole but never succeeded.
In 1914 he set sail a ship called the Endurance but it got stuck in the ice and he was stranded for 2 years before being rescued.
In 1921 Ernest tried one more time, but died of heart attack at the beginning of the expedition.

WHERE DID MY EXPLORER EXPLORE?
Ernest explored in the polar region, mostly around the South Pole and Antarctica.
He also explored Elephant island.
He also explored South Georgia and New Zealand.

WHEN DID ERNEST GO EXPLORING?
Ernest's first trip was from 1901-1903.
Ernest's second trip was from 1907-1909.
Ernest's third trip was from 1914-1917
His last trip to reach the South Pole was in 1922 but he died.

Ernest went exploring because he wanted to make money and become rich. He didn't!
He also went exploring because he liked doing it.
He went exploring because he wanted to find the South Pole though Antarctica.

HOW DID MY EXPLORER EXPLORE?
Ernest used warm clothes, food and water to explore.
He also used a compass and a telescope.
He used a ships called the Discovery,the Nimrod, the Endurance and the Quest.

HOW DID THINGS CHANGE AFTER HIS EXPLORATIONS?
Things changed because people figured out that Ernest explored a large unknown continent without any radio communication and modern travel aids.
He also showed that he was a great leader.
He was a inspiration to other explorers.

REFLECTIVE COMMENT
I think he was curious because he travelled four times to get to Antarctica.
He was a risk taker by sailing to an unknown continent because you don't know what is there and it could be dangerous too.
He was a great communicator because he helped his crew stay alive while they were stranded for two years. It is amazing that nobody died.
