INVERTEBRATES

ECHINODERMS

  • Have brittle and spiny skin
  • They have a circular shape
  • Example: starfish
  • Most have five arms coming from their center
  • Starfish can pull open their food with suction cups

SPONGES

  • Have their own phylum
  • Example: venus flower basket sponge
  • Can reorganize thier whole body from a single cell
  • They filter food from the water
  • Have two layers of cells

MOLLUSKS

  • Have a single muscular foot
  • Have a mantle
  • Snails have a radula that can scrape algae off of rocks
  • Most have a shell that protects them from pretadors
  • Example: snail

CNIDARIANS

  • Example: moon jellyfish
  • They have radial symmetry
  • They have two forms polyp, and medusa
  • They live in water
  • Most have tentacles with stinging cells on them

ARTHROPODS

  • All arthropods have jointed legs
  • Live on almost every continent
  • Some are poisonous
  • Example: black widow
  • Spiders use poison to kill or paralyze their prey

SEGMENTED WORMS

  • Example: earthworm
  • Earthworms burrow by eating dirt
  • Eathworms can live without a host unlike most other worms
  • Earthworms are somtimes called a farmer's plow because
  • Their tunnels allow plants to grow

FLATWORMS

  • Example: Planarian
  • Some flatworms are parasitic
  • Flatworms have only one opening in thier digestive system
  • Tapeworms are a type of parasitic flatworms
  • Planarians are a type of free-roaming flatworm

ROUNDWORMS

  • Example: hookworm
  • Most roundworms are parasitic
  • Some can cause diseases
  • Hookworms can dig through the feet of its host
  • Roundworms are almost micrscopic
