I can evaluate and analyze media selections.
What do you already know about a political cartoon? What is it's purpose?
When we look at political cartoons we want to pay attention to three aspects.
1. Content:
Who?
What?
When?
Where?
Why
Who is in the image and what does it represent?
2.
What methods does it use?
Types of Methods
- caricature: exaggerated feature of a person.
- symbolism: using a picture to represent something.
- stereotyping: a generalized character trait of a group of people.
- irony: contradiction.
- sarcasm: mockery or bitterness.
3. Connection
what is the purpose of the cartoon?
To analyze keep in mind...
- The date of the cartoon.- this reveals the possible event.
- the name of the author
- look for titles or captions
- identify possible historical figures or places.
In order to determine point-of-view
- Pay attention to the size and mannerisms of characters.
- the interactions between the characters
- facial expressions
