TAMING HAMSTERS

HAMSTERS NEED TO BE TAME TO BE HANDLED WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS.

A NEW AND/OR SCARED HAMSTER CAN:

  • Bite or nip
  • Eat very little
  • Not use wheel
  • Drink very little
  • Not use chews or toys
  • Hide and burrow most of the time

When In its new home, hamsters will need at least 3 days without human contact to reduce the risk of extreme stress and stress related illnesses. At least 3 inches of bedding is required for the well being of the hamster and provide hiding places.

STEPS FOR TAMING A HAMSTER

  • Put food between your fingers and see if the hamster takes it.
  • Put healthy treats on your hand and see if the hamster goes on your hand.
  • Try to cup the hamster and lift it a few inches off the ground.
  • Take the hamster to a bathtub to bond with him/her.

TIPS FOR TAMING

  • Take it slow
  • Do not advance to the next step until the hamster is comfortable with the previous steps
  • Do not use all the treats at once

Sure, these cages look like a good hamster home to humans, but for hamsters, it's too small and can stress a new hamster. The minimum cage size is 360 square inches for all species. Crittertrail cages are only suitable as an add-on and shouldn't be the only habitat.
