WHAT IS IT?

  • For those who don’t know, the 6th amendment is the amendment that gives everyone the right to a speedy and public trial.

WHY WAS IT CREATED?

  • People found it unfair to have to sit in jail for months sometimes even years, for a crime they didn’t commit or a crime that wasn’t serious such as “jaywalking “. Also because they felt that lower class citizens should have the right to a lawyer.

GIDEON V. WAINWRIGHT

  • Gideon v wainwright is who inspired the 6th amendment. He was charged with “breaking and entering”. Gideon didn’t have a lawyer, so he asked that they appoint one for him. The trial court denied and sentenced him to 5 years in prison. He petitioned because he felt there decision went against his constitutional rights.

  • Do You think everyone deserves the right to a lawyer or public defender?

DOES IT PERTAIN TO US?

  • Yes it does, Because of this amendment we don’t have to sit in jail for a long period of time just be found guilty or not guilty .
