Apollo lived on his father's trading ship with all of his father's men. They were always visiting new places.

THEY TRAVELED

THE ENTIRE AEGEAN SEA TRADING FOOD AND SUPPLIES

APOLLO AND HIS FATHER TRADED OLIVE OIL AND POTTERY

FOR GRAIN, TIMBER, AND METAL.

Sometimes Apollo and his dad ran into harsh weather, but they didn't have too many problems.

One day,
bandits robbed the ship!

APOLLO, HIS FATHER, AND THE REST OF THE CREW WERE HOMELESS!

THEY ALL NEEDED SOMEPLACE TO STAY

One day a farmer saw Apollo and his dad, so the farmer asked them if they wanted help. They said, "Yes!"

SO THEY ALL WORKED ON A FARM

In trade for another merchant ship

BUT WORKING ON THE FARM COULD BE TRICKY...

THE LAND WAS VERY ROCKY

AND THEY DIDN'T HAVE MUCH LAND, EITHER.

SO INSTEAD

THEY MADE WIDE EARTH STEPS

AND GREW PLANTS THAT DIDN'T NEED MUCH SPACE

LIKE WHEAT, BARLEY, AND OLIVES.

But eventually, the farmer didn't have enough food for everybody, so he was going to have to leave. He told Apollo, his dad, and the crew they could have the boat they had earned.

THE FARMER ALSO ASKED

IF THEY WANTED TO COME BUILD A NEW COLONY WITH HIM

AT FIRST THEY SAID NO...

BUT THEY THOUGHT OF ALL THE GOOD THINGS about a colony

  • New friends
  • enough food
  • safety in numbers
  • worship

They decided

Being in a colony was a great idea!

First

THEY HAD TO CONSULT AN ORACLE

(WHO SAID THE GODS WERE LOOKING DOWN ON THEM)

Second

They took a flame from the sacred fire

A colony!
