PRESENTATION OUTLINE
What is matter ? Matter is anything that takes up space or volume and has mass. Matter can exist in different states.
The four states of matter are solids, liquids, gases and plasma.
The characteristics of the states of matter are shape, mass, and volume. For solids all 3 of them are the same. For liquids the mass and the volume are the same but the shape changes. For gases the mass stays the same but the volume and shape change.
One example of matter changing is an ice cube. When the ice cube is a solid the molecules are so close to each other it has hardly any room to move around. When the energy of the sun hits the ice cube and melts into a puddle of water, the molecules have more room to move around. This is called the melting point. But when water turns into ice the water is still H2O. This means that there is two molecules of oxygen and one molecule of hydrogen. The one thing matter needs to change states is heat energy.
