FRANCE AND PARIS MONUMENTS

PANTHÉON

  • Where: Piazza della Rotonda, 00186 Roma RM, Italy
  • Age: 1,897
  • Purpose: In part, the Pantheon was meant to appease the gods because the destruction of the previous buildings in its place was seen as a sign that the gods were unhappy. In the niches would have originally stood statues of various gods, and deified emperors.
  • Historical Significance: Its importance lies in the fact that it is the best preserved monument from ancient Rome.
  • Fun Fact: There is a big hole in the ceiling of the Panthéon.

PARIS

OPÉRA GARNIER

  • Where: Pl. de l'Opéra, 75009 Paris, France
  • Age: 161
  • Historical Significance: It was the primary theatre of the Paris Opera and its associated Paris Opera Ballet until 1989, when a new opera house, the Opéra Bastille, opened at the Place de la Bastille. The company now uses the Palais Garnier mainly for ballet. The theatre has been a monument historique of France since 1923.
  • Purpose: The purpose of the Opéra Garnier is to have operas and plays there. Though it isn’t used very much anymore it is still a big part of Paris history.
  • Fun Fact: The Opéra Garnier Was used as a military camp.
