In Madison P. Croft’s, “Social Packaging: How Cultural Categories Influence Self-Perception and Identity,” She studied how labels affect the behavior of a group of subjects. Results indicate that when people are labeled, either by others or themselves, the outcome is detrimental to their wellbeing. She concludes that “Overdiagnosis and self-diagnosis are very dangerous things because of the negative effects a label can cause... individuals placed in a cultural category with more negative connotations will be more affected by their own label’s cultural assumptions... and this may be the most dangerous effect of the label, an individual is largely unaware that they are strongly affected by their label.” Labels shape a person’s identity often in individual and harmful ways and can create “negative self-feelings.” Often people are not aware that they are being shaped by their labels, which creates humans who are not conscious of their motivations in many situations. This behavior can cause people to lash out when triggered, often resulting in mental or physical injury.
