EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY

BY MADALYN FULLER

EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY

  • Introduction:
  • The Equality of Opportunity for youth and others is important. Over the years, from the time of former President FDR to now, Equality of Opportunity has changed in some ways, but it is still not ideal.

JOBS AND INCOME

  • According to research from the Brookings Institution, only 58% of Americans born into the bottom fifth of income earners move out of that category.
  • Latinos and African-Americans still get paid less than whites.
  • Women still get paid less than men.
  • Though diversity in the workplace is more than it once was, there's still a gap between each group.

EDUCATION

  • The achievement gap in education between rich and poor kids born in 2001 was 30 to 40% larger than it was of those born 25 years earlier, according to Stanford sociologist Sean F. Reardon.
  • It now seems as if policy has been designed to reduce opportunity
  • Government support for many state schools has been steadily gutted over the last few decades.

GOVERNMENT/ECONOMICS

  • Those at the top have the connections and social capital to get so many opportunities, while Those in the middle and bottom don't.
  • No one in this country can make it on their own anymore.
  • Government should do its job and help to level the playing field.

CONCLUSION

  • In conclusion to my research, I've found that the equality of opportunity in the US has changed very little for the better. There are still problems surrounding us in terms of equality. Problems that should've been done with years ago.
