ICEBREAKER QUESTION:
What Does God Want for Us... Meaning, What Is God's Heart Desire for People?

Untitled Slide

What God Wants for Us

More Than Anything, God Wants Us
To Be In Loving Relationship and Fellowship with Him and Others
(Matt 22:37-39)

Sin Keeps People God's
Greatest Desire for Us.
It Keeps People from Both a Relationship and Fellowship
with God

We Come Into Relationship with God Through Salvation (2 Peter 3:9) This Requires That Christians Do Evangelism (Rom 10:14; Acts 1:8)

We Come Into Fellowship with God Through Sanctification (1 Thes 5:23) and This Requires That Christians Do Discipleship (Mt 28:18-19)

Evangelism and Discipleship are the Two Essential Parts of the
Great Commission for Us
(Mt 28:19-20)

How can we Overcome Sin?

Background Theology

Our Victory Over the Effects of Sin Is Made Possible By Christ

Requirements for Providing Salvation

  • Human Salvation Required a Human "Savior" (2 Cor 5:21)
  • A Mediator Required a God-Man (1 Tim 2:5)
  • A Savior Required a Sinless Sacrifice (Heb 4:15)
  • The "Only-Begotten Son of God Was Required (Jn 3:16)

Jesus' Offering Himself for Us to Overcome the Effects of Sin Is Called the "Substitutionary Atonement" (1 Peter 3:18). Accepting Christ's Sacrifice for Us Makes Us "At One" with God

After Resurrecting and Ascending, Jesus Sat Down and Poured Out His Spirit on Believers Everywhere (Acts 1:1-5). Now, When Someone Believes, They are Saved and Born Again through the Spirit (Acts 2:38)

Our Salvation provides

  • Freedom from Sin's Penalty (Rom 8:1-2) = Life
  • Freedom from Sin's Power (Rom 6:6) = Freedom
  • Freedom from Sin's Presence (1 Thess 4:17) = Heaven

Christians can Overcome Sin

The Promise of Power Over Sin Applies to All Christians

For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with,[a] that we should no longer be slaves to sin (Rom 6:6)

If We Don't Have Freedom From Sin, We May Not Be In the Faith (2 Cor 13:5)

If we claim to have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. (1 John 1:6-7)

Avoiding Sin is essential for God's best

  • Sin Wounds Christians' RELATIONSHIP with God But Cannot Destroy It (Jn 10:29; Rom 8:30-39)
  • Sin Separates Christians' FELLOWSHIP With God (Isa 59:2 and 1 John 1:5-10)
  • Whenever We Fall for TEMPTATION, We Sin (Jam 1:15)

Understanding Temptation

Temptation is the cultivation of carnal (evil) desire within a person that present a moral decision of either overcoming or surrendering to it
(James 1:5)

If a person succumbs to temptation, s/he commits a sin and, if that happens repeatedly, a 'foothold' is created, leading to different degrees of destruction (James 1:15)

Facts About Temptation

  • We're defiled not from outside of us, but from the inside (Mk 7:15)
  • We cannot ever be forced to sin without personally and internally surrendering to it
  • God Doesn't Tempt Us (James 1:13)

Facts About Temptation

  • God allows us to be tempted by Satan AND our own desires (Mt 4:1-3; James 1:14)
  • Whenever God permits temptation, it is ALWAYS designed to "prove" we can overcome it (to "test") for Victory-- not to Tempt us for deception and defeat (Heb 2:18; Job 1:8-12)

Temptation Itself Isn't Sin (Heb 4:15)
-We should pray against it (Mt 6:13)
-We should flee it whenever possible, especially in areas of known susceptibility (2 Tim 2:22-24)

How TEMPTATION Works

  • We Never "Have" to Yield to It, We can always overcome it when surrendered to God (1 Cor 10:13*)
  • When We Yield, It Becomes Easier to Sin
  • When We Refuse, It Becomes Easier to Avoid

Countering Temptation

Defending Yourself against temptation

  • Get to know your propensities, inclinations, and proclivities when you're spiritually vulnerable
  • Satan knows these; You should too

Our vulnerability fluctuates

  • With unaddressed feelings of INJUSTICE
  • With unreleased STRESS
  • With unmet INTIMACY NEEDS
  • With needs for more SLEEP
  • With personal BOREDOM
  • Other PERSON-SPECIFIC Temptations

8 Shades of Sin

Sin Progressively Contaminates Us in Degrees As We Give in To Temptations and Our Baser Self

1. Missing the Mark (Judges 20:16)
Word Used Most in Scripture for When We Yield to Temptation, Over 600 Times. Speaks of "deliberate failure'- not like "failing to win" but like "purposefully throwing the game"

2. Transgression (Deut 17:2)
Perhaps the second most used word for sin. It means "going too far." It is to go farther than we should, intentionally, and to move outside God's umbrella of protection

3. Irreverence (2 Sam 6:7)
Connotes failure to give proper honor and respect to God and His character. It means to willfully sin, but also consciously doing so with ill intent and without regard

4. Iniquity (Isa 53:6)
Used 14x (NIV), it implies a lack of character and integrity; It is more than an action-- it represents deeper character flaws and not merely inattention

5. Rebellion (Romans 1:24-25)
Used 42x (NIV), it is to knowingly think of God and then act in a deliberate decision to disobey, defiantly. It means to know the standard, then deliberately break it.

6. Treachery (Isa 24:16)
From the root word for "trea"son, it implies a breach of trust. More than rebellion, this involves personal and deliberate opposition. It's breaking the letter AND spirit of the law in a way that reveals betrayal of trust and good faith

7. Perversion (Lev 18:23; 20:12; Jude 7; Romans 1:27)
Used 4x (NIV), speaks to actions that are unnatural and that willfully twist or bend something's legitimate or natural use for an unnatural one. It signifies deep personal corruption.

8. Abomination (Prov 6:16)
Used 5x in scripture, it shows the most grave and consequential sin. These are egregious and cause God great personal revulsion. They nauseate and offend God's character and violate the essence of how He created and ordained things to be.

"abomination' is used for heinous acts

  • Exalting someone over God (Mt 24:15)
  • Sacrificing their children to idols (2 Chronicles 28:3)
  • Cannibalism (Ezekiel 5:7-11; Leviticus 26:27-30)
  • Transvestism/Transgenderism (Deut 22:5)
  • Homosexual Acts (Lev 18:22-30)

From Scripture, We Know Sin Can Be:

  • Done in Ignorance
  • Done Willfully
  • Done Maliciously
  • In Unseen Attitudes
  • In Unseen Thoughts
  • In Unseen Motivations
  • In Personal Decisions, Actions, and Behaviors

Our Power Over Sin

The Biggest Secret About Overcoming Sin Is That ALL Believers ALREADY Possess The Power to Consistently Win.

This Power Comes from Knowing, Acknowledging, and Applying Truth and By a Few Techniques We Can Apply Daily

Win the Mind Game Over Besetting sins

  • We are dead to sin (Rom 6:2)
  • We don't have to live in sin (Rom 6:2)
  • We have resurrection power over sin (Rom 6:3-4)
  • When we repented at Salvation, sin lost its power over us (Rom 6:6-7)
  • We can embrace victory over sin and consistently choose to live in freedom (Romans 6: 11)

Untitled Slide

  • We can choose not to allow sin to reign in our lives as a lifestyle (Rom 6:12-14*)
  • Only if we CHOOSE to pursue sin, we can become re-enslaved to sin (Rom 6:16)
  • Using the power we ALREADY HAVE, if we CHOOSE Obedience to God, we will become holy (Rom 6:17-19)
  • Living in Sin is a Waste of Our Lives, Beneath Us, and We Now Have Power to Choose Better for Ourselves (Rom 6:20-23)

  • As believers, God gives us new desires against sin, but until we learn to apply these truths, we can remain in bondage (Rom 7:14-25)
  • If we guard our minds and deliberately choose to fix them on the things of God, we will consistently overcome sin (Phil 4:8; Rom 8:5-8)
  • If we are not truly and actually believers, we will not possess this power and we will remain powerless over sin (Rom 8:9-11; 2 Cor 13:5)
