WHAT IS HIV/AIDS

  • HIV: „Human immunodeficiency virus“, attacks the body‘s immune system
  • AIDS: „Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome“, advanced stage of HIV

WHAT IS WORLD AIDS DAY?

  • Observed annually on December 1.
  • Established in 1988 by the World Health Organisation (WHO)
  • Aim: Raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and support those living with HIV.
  • Theme 2024: „Take the rights path: My health, my right!“

WHY IT MATTERS

  • Over 39 Million people living with HIV globally (UNIAIDS 2023)
  • Millions affected by stigma and discrimination

FACTS!

  • No cure for HIV / AIDS
  • No vaccine to prevent HIV infection

HOW CAN I GET HIV / AIDS

  • Unprotected sex (sex without a condom)
  • Sharing needles for injecting drugs
  • From mother to baby

YOU CAN‘T GET IT FROM…

  • …kissing, hugging, smiles, shaking hands
  • …sharing drinks, glasses, knives, forks
  • … everyday contact with someone who has HIV/AIDS
