• puritan belief that god chose whose life he would save
• god purpose was that all life would achieve salvation

To disobey god rules was a sin
Revealed a lack of trust that god would save all

• Too obey god's rule meant he would save you but to disobey was a sin
• Good (saved), Evil (punished)
