Tessellations

Fact #1 About Tessellations

  • A tessellation is a design of a pattern of shapes that are fit together. The shapes that are fit together are often polygons, however, there are also different types of shapes in tessellations.

Fact #2 About Tessellations

  • The three basic shapes in tessellations are triangles, hexagons, squares.

Fact #3 About Tessellations

  • A regular tessellation can be made by having a pattern that includes the repeating of regular polygons.

Fact #4 About Tessellations

  • To make a semi-regular polygon, you need two or more regular polygons. Also, in each vertex, the pattern must be the same.

Fact #5 About Tessellations

  • In a tessellation, there are corner points. These corner points are called vertexes.

Fact #6 About Tessellations

  • In order to name a tessellation, you must go around a vertex. Then, you need to write down how many sides there are associated with each polygon.

Fact #7 About Tessellations

  • Tessellations were used as designs to make floor and ceiling tiles in buildings that are in Rome.

Fact #8 About Tessellations

  • All tessellations are symmetrical, and they include a repeated pattern.

Fact #9 About Tesellations

  • The four types of symmetry in a tessellation are translation, reflection, rotation, and glide reflection.

Fact #10 About Tessellations

  • Some people allow there to be curved shapes in tessellations instead of just having polygons in tessellations.
