You have a decision to Make

Whenever there’s a fair bit of rain, I like to run a paper boat challenge to reinforce buoyancy concepts, and innovation. Given we’ve had a month’s worth in two days, you should have streams just outside your abode (see gutters), though puddles could work too.

So, if you feel up to it, ignore the quiz today, and experiment with a paper boat. You’ll need to fold it, test it, and improve its seaworthiness. Document the stages, and submit a reflection of the process.

Key ideas

  • Laminations
  • Surface area:density
  • Waterproofing
  • Centre of gravity

Reflections

  • What changes did you make to make your boat last?
  • How is your boat design successful in the conditions (centre of gravity, surface area to density, etc)?
  • Don’t forget to document your successes and failings.
