FAMILIES

A family is a group of two or more persons who reside together in a household. They are usually related by blood, marriage, or adoption.

STEP FAMILY/BLENDED FAMILY.

  • A step family is a household where two families are united through marriage.
  • Brings persons from previous marriages together under one roof.
  • Starting to become a more common family wigh career and location sacrifices.
  • Also referred to as a blended family and provides new experiences.
  • An example of a step/blended family would be the Brady Bunch.

NUCLEAR FAMILY.

  • Consists of a father, mother and thier children living together.
  • Also called a traditional family.
  • If only a single earner in a two parent family occurs, they must have a high paying job to sustain life.
  • Fewer nuclear families exist today than in the past.
  • An example of a nuclear family would be "The Cosby Show."

EXTENDED FAMILY.

  • An extended family a family that extends beyond the nuclear family.
  • This includes grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other relatives, who all live nearby or in one household.
  • In an extended family, the family changes from an immediate household to an extended household.
  • In some cultures, the term is used synonymously with consanguineous family.
  • An example of an extended family would be "Home Alone" the movie.

FOSTER FAMILY

  • To take care of someone's needs.
  • Foster parents take kids into their homes and take care of them for as long as kids need.
  • They give a child a home to live and grow.
  • An example of a foster family would be the TV Series "The Fosters".

Childless Family/Couple.
Couples without children, and they choose to not have them. They feel they are not ready or responsible for another's life. Some are not physically able to have children. They have more freedom for career choice.
An example of this would be in Grey's Anatomy: Owen and Christina.

Single-Parent Families.
Have a mother and a follow at the head of a household. Both parents either have full custody or partial. One parent has the total caregiver role and have roles within the household.
An example of this would be Toy Story.

ADOPTIVE FAMILIES.

  • A person who adopts a child of other parents as his or her own child.
  • In many cases children are adopted by relatives.
  • Many laws are related with adoption.
  • Adoptions can be made from all over the world.
  • An example of an adoptive family would be the movie "Free Willy".
