What is the Nervous System?
The nervous system is a complex system that regulates and coordinates body activities. It is made of two major divisions, including the following:
Central nervous system - consisting of the brain and spinal cord.
Peripheral nervous system - consisting of all other neural elements
In short, our nervous system controls how we function on the outside, as well as on the inside.

What is in the nervous system? The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, sensory organs (see, touch, smell, taste, and hearing), and all of the nerves that connect these organs with the rest of the body. Together, these organs are responsible for the control of the body and communication among its parts. The brain and spinal cord form the control center known as the central nervous system (CNS), where information is evaluated and decisions made. The sensory nerves and sense organs of the peripheral nervous system monitor conditions inside and outside of the body and send this information to the CNS. Nerves in the PNS carry signals from the control center to the muscles, glands, and organs to regulate their functions.

What is the Central Nervous System? This the processing center for the nervous system. It receives information from and sends information to the peripheral nervous system. The two main organs of the CNS are the brain and spinal cord. The brain processes and interprets sensory information sent from the spinal cord. Both the brain and spinal cord are protected by three layers of connective tissue called the meninges. Within the CNS is a system of hollow cavities called ventricles. The network of linked cavities in the brain is continuous with the central canal of the spinal cord. The ventricles are filled with fluid which is produced by epitheliumm located within the ventricles called the choroid plexus. Cerebrospinal fluid surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord from trauma.

What is the Peripheral Nervous System? The peripheral nervous system, is part of the nervous system, and consists of the nerves and neurons that reside or extend outside the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) to serve the limbs and organs, for example.
Unlike the central nervous system, however, the PNS is not protected by bone or the blood-brain barrier, leaving it exposed to toxins and mechanical injuries.
The peripheral nervous system is divided into the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system.

9 Facts About The Nervous System?
- There are more nerve cells in the human brain than there are stars in the Milky Way.
- If we lined up all the neurons in our body it would be around 600 miles long.
- There are 100 billion neurons in your brain alone.
- A newborn baby's brain grows almost 3 times during the course of its first year.
-Your brain does not fully develop until your 10
- A New born baby loses about half of their nerve cells before they are born.
- The base of the spinal cord has a cluster of nerves, which are the most sensitive.
- Neurons are the largest cells in the human body.
- The Nervous System can transmit impulses as fast as 100 meters per second.
