Who were the Puritans?
The Puritans wanted to purify the church of England.
They could not make changes to the church without being punished.
They settled in the Massachusetts Bay colony

They set out to the New World since they could not purify the church in England without being punished.
The Puritans settled in the Massachusetts Bay colony.

A Puritan Town
A Puritan town was centered around a common, a patch of grass where people let their livestock graze.
The stores and the meeting house were nearest to the common.
The mills, fields and houses were further away from the common.

Puritan Daily Life
Puritan boys went to school. They learned to read and write from the Bible
The men had jobs.
Puritans had to go to church every day.
If someone broke the rules, they could be expelled from the colony, be in stockade, have public whippings, or even hangings.

Roger Williams
Roger Williams studied Indian languages and grew fond with the relations between them and the English government.
He thought it was wrong to take Indian lands without any payment to them.
He became enemies with the English government and was expelled from the colony
He sought protection from an Indian tribe and bought land from the Indians to make a settlement called Providence in Rhode Island

Anne Hutchinson
Anne did not go to school but learned from her father`s discussions.
Her family followed their favorite minister to the New World.
Anne began to hold weekly prayer meetings in her home for the women of the colony.
More men and woman came to her. The church feared she would become more popular than them.
Anne was brought to trial and was asked to deny her beliefs. She did not deny them and was expelled from the colony.
Roger Williams encouraged her to make a new settlement in Rhode Island.
She did not purchase the land from the Indians and her and most of her family were later killed by Indians.

Social classes/Individual Roles
Women took care of the children and cleaned and cooked.
Men worked.
Kids went to school.
11.
Indentured Servants
An Indentured servant was some one who asked a family who had a lot of money to pay for their ticket to the New World.
They would then do chores for the family until they had enough money to pay back their ticket.
