PEASANTS REVOLT

1ST CAUSE

  • After black death, many manors were short of workers
  • Workers thought they can receive higher wages
  • Parliament passed 'statute of labourers (1351)
  • Maximum wage, put to prison if they refused
  • Poor people stayed poor = angry 😡😡😡😡

2ND CAUSE

  • Villeins still cannot move around
  • Cannot find better work
  • Must remain working w the same lord
  • Even though they were promised freedom
  • 😡😡😡😡😡😤😤😤😤😤😠😠😠😠 feudal system

3RD CAUSE

  • Peasants are sick of 'work service'
  • ^ work for free , treated like slaves
  • Have to pay 10% of earning to church
  • All food given to priest, scared to go to hell
  • Famine was going on

  • England was at war with france
  • Weak government -king richard iI (10)
  • Introduced a poll tax to pay for war - 5pounds
  • 😡😡😡😡😡
  • Uncle john gaunt ran the country

A Tax collector came to Essex village to pester taxes & got thrown out

WHAT HAPPENS

  • Peasants from kent + essex marched to london
  • Leader of peasants - wat tyler from kent
  • Destroyed tax registers, burnt buildings
  • John ball ( priest ) supported them as well
  • They all wanted to negotiate w the king

JUNE 14TH

  • King met the rebels
  • Richard II gave the peasants everything they wanted
  • Some left london, some stayed
  • After another meeting in 15th, lord mayor killed wattyler
  • John ball was hanged , revolt defeated.

SUMMER OF 1381

  • Revolt was over
  • Richard did not keep any of his promises
  • Leaders in kent and essex killed
  • Poll tax withdrawn
  • Peasants were forced back into their old way of life
