PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Comparison of Atmospheres
Mercury and earth's atmosphere
- Not too similar
- Earth's is stable, not Mercury's
- Both contain more oxygen
Saturn and earth's atmosphere
- Also very different
- Barely any nitrogen in Saturn's, 78% in Earth's
- Saturn's Atmosphere - more clouds
Discovery of earth's atmosphere
- Mid 1600s - Proved existence of air pressure (Multiple scientists)
- 1660 - Robert Boyle invented barometer
- 1674 - Gas in atmosphere supported life (John Mayow)
- 1774 - Identified oxygen's properties (Joseph Priestley)
THE compisition of our atmosphere
- Dry air: 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, other traces of gases
- Water Vapor: About 0.25%
- Salt, dust, etc.
IS THERE WATER ON THESE PLANETS?
is there water on these planets?
- Mercury - Water Vapor in atmosphere, meaning water/ice on planet
- Venus - Only 0.002% vapor found in atmosphere
- Mars - Small amounts of vapor, water may occur on planet
DO DWARF PLANETS HAVE ATMOSPHERES?
DO dwarf planets have atmospheres?
- Pluto - Thin atmosphere, expands when comes closer to Sun. Composed of Nitrogen, Methane, Carbon Monoxide
- Makemake - may develop atmosphere made of nitrogen when closest to Sun.
Do dawrf planets have atmospheres?
- Ceres - very thin atmosphere, evidence contains vapor. Vapor made by ice volcanoes or ice near surface sublimating
DO DAWRF PLANETS HAVE ATMOSPHERE?
- Eris - Atmosphere collapses and freezes because far from Sun, falls to surface as snow
Do dwarf planets have atmospheres
- Haumea - Scientists know little about atmosphere
