WHEN DID CHRISTMAS START?

  • Christmas wasn't celebrated in Norway until about 1,000 or 1,100 when Christianity first came to the area!

WHAT IS SANTA CALLED?

  • In Norway Santa is called Julenissen!
  • Presents are also brought by small gnomes called "Nisse".

Christmas Tree

  • The Christmas tree in Norway is called Juletre.
  • They are often decorated with candles, Apples, red hearts, cornets, straw ornaments, balls of glass and tinsel.

CANDLE

  • It is a tradition for family's in some parts of Norway to light a candle every night from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day.

WHAT MARKS THE BEGINNING OF CHRISTMAS?

  • Christmas in Norway begins with the Saint Lucia ceremony on the 13th of December.
  • At the crack of dawn the youngest daughter from each family puts on a white robe with a sash.

  • The boys dress up as star boys with long white shirts and pointed hats.
  • They wake there parents and serve them coffee and Lucia buns.

  • In the days between Christmas and New Year's Eve, the children sometimes go from house to house in the afternoon Asking for sweets. The tradition is called "Christmas luck."

WHAT DO PEOPLE DO DURING CHRISTMAS EVE?

  • Christmas Eve is the time when presents are exchanged. A lot of people also go to a church service before they gather at home around the table for a nice Christmas Eve dinner.

WHAT MAKES UP THE TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS EVE DINNER?

  • The dinner can consist of salted and dried rib of mutton with potatoes,carrots,sprouts and cauliflower.
  • For desert Norwegians have rice blended with whipped cream served with red sauce, caramel pudding and cherry mousse.

HOW DO NORWEGIANS SPEND CHRISTMAS EVE?

  • On Christmas Day, a lot of people have a big brunch at noon or dinner in the afternoon with friends and family. It can last for several hours.
