In the poem, the narrator states, "And again to the child I whispered, "The snow that husheth all, darling, the merciful Father alone can make it fall (Lowell 33-36)!" This supports the idea that suffering can bring us closer to God because the narrator realizes that God is supreme and controls all things. From the death of his daughter, that narrator realizes that God is the only one that can control everything.
