According to hope for the troubled heart by billy Graham, the death of a loved one can bring us closer to God by helping us honor him and find comfort in him. Sometimes when people are mourning, people turn to God even if they inverse before. It can also strengthen our faith in him because we have to believe that God does everything even do not understand it.

In addition, grieving can make us more empathetic to the suffering of others, so we become kinder which is something God wants us to do. Through that we can help spread his word and do good works for his glory. The novel supports this by writing, "Jesus pointed them to the future in the hope hat even suffering can be used to glorify God (Graham 3)."

In the poem, the narrator states, "And again to the child I whispered, "The snow that husheth all, darling, the merciful Father alone can make it fall (Lowell 33-36)!" This supports the idea that suffering can bring us closer to God because the narrator realizes that God is supreme and controls all things. From the death of his daughter, that narrator realizes that God is the only one that can control everything.
