Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

DESCRIPTION

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is an infection of a woman's reproductive organs.
  • It can lead to irreversible damage to the uterus, ovaries, Fallopian tubes or other parts in the female reproductive system.

TRANSMISSION

  • Spreads by sexual contact
  • The infection can be also be caught anally or orally.

RISK FACTORS

  • Having sex without a condom
  • Being in a sexual relationship with a person who has more than one sex partner
  • Being a sexually active woman younger than 25 years old

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  • Pain in lower abdomen
  • Fever
  • Pain and/or bleeding
  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • Bad odor

PREVENTION AND CONTROL

  • Do not have vaginal, anal, or oral sex without protection.
  • Test for disease or infection before sex
  • If one has had PID before, they are more likely to get it again.

TREATMENT

  • This disease may cause permanent damage but it can be cured.
  • Antibiotics provided by a doctor will heal the problem within a few weeks.

  • PID is Bacterial

CURRENT STATISTICS

  • Women who are 25 or younger are more likely to get it then women who are 25 or older
  • 1 in 8 people become sterile after having PID
