WHAT IS ABORTION?

  • Abortion is when a baby is killed in their mother's womb before they can survive outside of the womb.

TWO TYPES OF ABORTION

  • Spontaneous- occurs naturally, the mother did nothing to end the pregnancy it ended through its own means
  • Induced- abortion done through human intervention

THREE TYPES OF INDUCED ABORTIONS

  • Eugenic- done because of a malformation of the baby
  • Therapeutic- done in cases of rape
  • Psychological- (psychosocial) done for economic, social, psychological reasons

WHAT THE CHURCH SAYS

  • The Church teaches that every person is a human being with dignity, from the moment of conception.
  • The church also says that a baby in the womb has the same rights as anyone else.
  • Abortion is morally wrong

CHURCH TEACHINGS CONT.

  • Everyone has a right to life, and killing violates the 5th commandment
  • CCC 2270 "Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life."

PRINCIPAL OF DOUBLE EFFECT

The act to be done must be good in itself

  • Not permissible, direct killing of a child, and that act can never be good

good effect must nof be obtained by means of an evil effect

  • The intention is to terminate the pregnancy
  • Terminating the pregnancy is killing the baby so it violates this rule

THE EVIL EFFECT MUST NOT OUTWEIGHT THE GOOD EFFECT

  • The good effect would be the mother feels unburdened
  • The bad effect is that the baby is dead and the mother will have emotional and maybe physical scars from it

must be a proportionately grave reason for permitting the evil effect

  • The effect of terminating the pregnancy is not proportional to killing the baby in the womb and ending the baby's life

10 COMMANDMENTS

  • Abortion violates commandment 5 you shall not kill

PRO-CHOICE ARGUMENT

CASES OF RAPE

  • A big argument for being pro-choice is cases of rape. Many see this as the mother not wanting to be pregnant so why should she have to keep the baby. That baby will be a constant reminder of the terrible act done to the mother.

ACCIDENTAL PREGNANCIES

  • There was no intention on getting pregnant and it was an accident and other accidents can be fixed( burst appendix or broken bone) so why can't this be fixed to?
  • Young pregnancies the girl has her whole life to live still but now she can't because of the baby

IF MADE ILLEGAL AGAIN

  • If abortion is made illegal again then there would still be abortions happening but they would be done in an unsafe way

FINACIAL REASONS

  • If the mother can barely provide for herself how is she going to support herself and a baby
  • There would be hospital bills and extra expenses to pay for.

PRO-LIFE ARGUMENT

Untitled Slide

  • There is life from the moment of conception so no matter how early on in the pregnancy you are killing a baby

HEALTH

  • Having an abortion can affect your mental health
  • It can also make it so that you can't have kids later on in life or have difficulty having kids

FINANCE

  • If finance is an issue and you put the baby up for adoption there are agencies and couples who will pay for all hospital visit bills and medical bills.

WHICH IS RIGHT?

  • Pro-choice-- is an immoral view on abortion because it subjects the baby to just a part of the mother " my body my choice" but it not actually their body because it's the babies
  • This is a immoral way to view it

Untitled Slide

  • Pro-Life-- the moral view on abortion, because no matter how early on in the pregnancy there is life and you are killing that person so it is murder.

  • We choose Dorothy Day because she knew both ends of this issue and was a huge advocate against abortion when she was alive
