PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Education 536

Review of our 4 main course projects. The projects overlap.
Projects 1 and 2 are used for Project 3.
All projects are used for Project 4.

Project One: Development of 21st Century Learners

Lesson Plan Project
Requires finding a lesson on the Common Sense Media site and adapting it to fit your learners. Your objectives need to fit your learners, who you will identify at the start of the lesson. Differentiate the lesson to meet diversified student needs. Incorporate elements of universal design (e.g., ELL, IEPs, reading levels, multiple learning style.) Focus on 21st century skills, i.e. 4 Cs of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. Consider use of a survey or some form of pre and post assessment to reflect on the lesson and student learning.

Common Sense Media

Plan Modified for Your Learners
Include summation of Common Sense Media digital citizenship resources related to your grade level as found in the curricular scope and sequence. Link to the specific lesson you adapted. Your lesson is not verbatim from the site. You need to fulfill the specifics of this project, which require adapting the lesson to your learners, including differentiation, setting objectives that reflect differentiation, and matching the assessment to the objectives.
"Candidate provides documentation which demonstrates thorough investigation of Common Sense Media digital citizenship resources."

Differentiation

Universal Design
Include a section in the plan that addresses the student population in terms of grade level, below, on, above, and students with special needs, such as gifted, IEPs, and ELLs.
"The lesson discusses differentiation based on Universal Design."
"Lesson objective indicates differentiation."
"Assessment is aligned to the lesson objective and the tool is differentiated for student needs."

21st Century Skills

4C's
Be sure the skills of collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and creativity are incorporated. Collaboration can include partnering, small-group, or cross-class project. For communication, consider more than just a class oral discussion. For critical thinking, engage students in analysis, synthesis, and critique. Allow for students to create a product during the lesson.
"Lesson objective is tightly aligned to a specific 21st century skills." "Candidate integrates all elements of 21st century skills to engage and empower their students."

Feedback

to Students
How did you provide feedback to guide students throughout the lesson? Seek student feedback. What did they think of the lesson? What did they learn? What might they suggest for the future? Consider a survey or some form of exit ticket.
"Feedback is provided to students throughout the lesson."

Student Samples

Photos, Screen Captures, Surveys
Remember to collect student samples. Consider a survey. Consider an interview with students or peers. You will use these elements for both the Creating Digital Citizens and Digital Portfolio Projects.

Reflection

on Lesson Plan
Consider such questions: how well did the lesson go as you think back on it, how will you alter it in the future, & what might you share with colleagues about how the lesson went and how students reacted? How can this lesson help you plan for the future?
"Candidate reflection focuses on all students and effectiveness based on differentiated strategies and on lesson data."
"Candidate identifies teaching strengths and areas of need."

Connect Project 1

to Projects 3 & 4
The lesson plan you write, student samples, and the final reflection will be included in your Digital Portfolio project.

Project 2: Understanding Digital Citizens

Requirements
Select a topic that is of interest to you, your students, and your school community that in some way relates to the concepts of digital citizenship.
1) You will find an article in the popular media about this topic and share it in our class, posting it for us to see and for you to discuss in class.
2) Find articles in peer-reviewed journals using the university's database and Google Scholar. Locate recent articles relate to your topic (no more than 8 years back) & create an annotated bibliography. Format the citations in APA format. Write a few sentences summarizing the key findings of the article and critiquing its value and relevance to your topic and your own learning.
3) Write a convincing essay synthesizing the key findings from the research.
4) Implement a lesson with your students on the topic based on the popular media article and your research.

Popular Media

Post for Class Sharing
This first step means once you select your topic, you will find online an article dealing with topic as represented in the popular media. Using Google Community, you will post the name of the article and link to it for us to find the article. In class, lead us to the article and lead a brief discussion.

Research

Peer-Reviewed Articles
The field of educational technology changes rapidly, though the concept of digital citizenship emerged early on once we started to implement online tools in the classroom. Thus, for the peer-reviewed articles select ones that are recent and still have relevance.

Bibliography

You need to include in the Digital Portfolio the following,

"The bibliography includes all reading for the course and includes a brief summary of its importance to the learner."

Thus as first step for the Understanding Digital Citizens, start to write this bibliography using APA format. You will add to this bibliography our two course readings.

Essay

Reports, critiques the research
This is an academic essay that organizes key findings from the research in an organized manner. It is suggested you have an introduction to indicate the relevance of the topic and the key parts of the essay. Consider headings to organize the essay and to group common information. Each section needs to include analyze, synthesize and critique. You are following the APA style of writing, which means you summarize instead of quote sources. Use proper citation format for in-text citations. Have a strong conclusion to synthesize major findings and to relate those findings to your practice and to make recommendations for educational policy. The essay is evaluated using two rubrics, both of which will be explained in class.

"Candidate clearly defines and critically examines an issue of Digital Citizenship. Research and identifies all elements to be investigated."
"Discussion of elements includes pros and cons."
"Research is exhaustive and includes authors with various stances concerning the topic."
"Analysis thoroughly investigates both sides of elements within the area of concern."
"Based on logical analysis and provides a child centered perspective."

Text use of APA is correct."

Lesson

related to Popular Media Posting & Research
"Step 3: Develop a lesson for your students that in some way teaches them to be better digital citizens relative to the headline in question and also reflects your conclusion (step 2).

Step 4: Create a short survey of the lesson for your students. Teach the lesson and have your students fill out the survey.

Step 5: Calculate the results of your survey and post in our Community. "

The lesson for your students should be based on the research and the article from the popular media. The lesson can be a continuation of the lesson you implemented for Project 1, Development of 21st Century Leaners. You can also use a lesson you have planned already in your curriculum and add another layer that incorporates concepts from the research, popular media article, The Common Sense Media site, and Mike Ribble's book.

The directions for this project do not have evaluative criteria for the Lesson Plan. That criteria will be found in Project 3, Creating Digital Citizens. You will use the lesson plan described in the directions for the Understanding Digital Citizens Project to create a presentation for the Creating Digital Citizens and this project. The lesson plans will need some modifications to meet the criteria for the Creating Digital Citizens Project, so refer to that project criteria.

Survey

students
"Step 4: Create a short survey of the lesson for your students. Teach the lesson and have your students fill out the survey.
Step 5: Calculate the results of your survey and post in our Community. "

This information will be needed for the Creating Digital Citizens Project.

Presentation

Make it Engaging
You will present the Understanding Digital Citizenship Project in class, summarizing key findings from the research. Figure out a way to make the presentation interactive so you are not presenting a lecture. We will learn best by "doing" and not being "lectured."
"The presentation was clear, accurate and engaging. The presentation used many features available with this tool."
"All sources are APA cited and are copyright free. All permissions to use text and video are available.
Text use of APA is correct." This means, also, any images used must be used according to Creative Commons licensing. Of course, consider collecting your own images, including classroom photos, photos of student work, images from student surveys, and so forth. Follow the AUP of your school.

Project 3

Creating Digital Citizens
This project requires creating a presentation that synthesizes elements from the two prior projects. There is no need to implement a new lesson with your students. Instead draw upon what you have taught and the artifacts you collected and put all of these together in a cohesive fashion.

Project 3:
Connect to Projects
1 and 2

Look back on all the elements you collected for 21st Century Learners and Understanding Digital Citizens and conceptualize how you can capture all of the key elements in a culminating Presentation Project. The project also requires including demographic data about your student population.

Create

with presentation tool
You can select a presentation tool of your choice. This presentation needs to be inputted into LiveText. Therefore make sure the presentation will be viewable and not require using an access code. You can accompany the presentation before uploading to LiveText with a written explanation in summary form that addresses the criteria for the project and then include a link to find the project online. Keep in mind some presentation tools such as Google Slides and HaikuDeck can be downloaded to PowerPoint or saved as PDF. There is also the possibility of screen capturing the slides from a presentation if you use a tool such as Nearpod and stringing together these screen captures in a PowerPoint or Word file that can be uploaded to LiveText.
