The main causes of elderly abuse are stress and emotional problems.
The reason for elder abuse can be several things. However a person who is already struggling to deal with their own emotional battles is not in the frame of mind to deal with the tedious task of caring for an elder. When others do take care of elders they can become stressed and take their frustrations out on the innocent victim.
The primary research procedure that was best for determining the main causes of elderly abuse were interviews.
The procedure followed was: Come up with questions Ensure questions provide answers to cause of elderly abuse Find elders to interview Conduct interviews/surveys
8 out of 10 answered yes to being a victim of elder abuse 5 out of 8 identified a family member of the abuser 3 out of 8 identified their piece of nurse/care worker 2 out of 8 answered that they were not sure of the reason 4 out of 8 stated family members/care workers grew stressed and frustrated 2 out of 8 stated that their abusers was suffering from alcoholism and personal issues
Discussion The main focus of this research was to discover reasons behind elderly abuse and these findings confirm the hypothesis.
The secondary research findings concluded that ignorance, mental illness, emotional problems, alcoholism and drug abuse were the main causes for abusers to commit their crime against the elderly.
The primary research conducted concluded some of the same results as the secondary research.
In conclusion, stress and emotional problems were amongst the top factors in causes of elder abuse.
Both the primary and secondary research confirmed emotional issues, alcoholism and stress as the most common factors.
It is unfortunate that this is what is occurring, and it is happening around us every day. If there is awareness then a solution could be implemented, and the abuse of innocent elders could decrease and hopefully, disappear.
