A long time ago in North America acorns were an important staple food for the Luiseño.

After, the Luiseño gathered the acorns and stored them in granaries.

The Luiseño used the hammerstone and winnowing tray to take off the shell and skin.

The Luiseño used a mortar and a pestle to grind acorns into a fine flour called meal.

The Luiseño used a process called leaching to get the tannic acid out of the meal to make it edible.

Finally, they cooked the meal in an olla and stirred it with a paddle.

In conclusion, acorns were a very valuable food for the Luiseño. Believe it or not, acorns can be edible!
