  • The San Xavier mission was founded in 1692
  • Father Kino founded the church as a Catholic Mission
  • Construction of the mission began in 1783; finished 1797
  • The church continues to serve mass to its parishioners
  • Located in Tucson, south of downtown

HISTORY

  • The church was constructed while Arizona was New Spain
  • The architect was Ignacio Gaona, and the force was made up of O'ohdam
  • In 1821, San Xavier became part of the newly freed Mexico
  • Then, became American territory following the Gadsten Purchase in 1857
  • services were once again held in 1866, following Tucson becoming a diocese

PRESENT DAY

  • A school was opened in the Mission in the year 1872
  • The Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity teach and reside in the convent
  • The Franciscans, who left in 1822, returned to the Mission in 1913
  • Mission San Xavier is a non-profit entity
  • They still have regular services for anyone who wishes to attend
