PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Weathering: The natural process by which atmospheric and environmental agents changes, disintegrate, and decompose rocks
Abrasion: The grinding and wearing away of rock surfaces through the mechanical action of rock or sand particles
Oxidation: The process by which a metallic element combines with oxygen
Hydrolysis: A chemical reaction between water and another substance to form two or more substances
Carbonation: The conversion of a compound into a carbonate
Differential Weathering: The process by which softer, less weather-resistant rocks wear away at a faster rate than harder, more weather-resistant rocks do
Erosion: A process in which the materials of the Earth’s surface are loosened, dissolved, or worn away and transported from one place to another by a natural agent, like water, wind, ice, or gravity
Humus: Dark, organic material formed in the soil from the decayed remains of plants and animals
Creep: The slow downhill movement of weathered rock material
Solifluction: The slow, downslope flow of soil saturated with water in areas surrounding glaciers at high elevations
