American and Canadian railroads began using the time zones due to confusion of dealing with many local times. They started to realize that it was very difficult to schedule. Fir one train, you could have dozens of different times. Finally they asked for a efficient time-keeping system. The govt. was not involved, rather the railroad systems created it on their own. It wasn't till the 1918 that congress adopted this.
The immigrants used the railway to travel and make immigrant settlements along the tracks. The making of these and the pacific railroad didn't start till 1862 when Lincoln passed the pacific railway act. This was when most people and immigrants started to travel more on railways.

As the United States became more popular and discovered, it was very interesting to have undiscovered land that settlers had never seen. If course they kept pushing Indians off to reservations for farming land, it was soon realized that they're was more land to farm on. Many settlers moved they're whole family out to new lands to farm, discover, and create a new life. Once some people began to go discover, it was a gamble to many and they were willing to take it.
