The way that a tsunami works is when a plate in the earth collides with another plate and an underwater earthquake and tsunami is formed.

On Boxing Day (December 26,) in 2004 in the Indian Ocean a 9.0 magnitude earthquake underwater made a huge tsunami wave killing more than 250,000 people.

A tsunami is like a huge tidal wave and can wipe out an entire city and maybe more.

The killing of 250,000 people is the worst tsunami in modern time. The wave traveled 300 mph and left 1.7 million people homeless.
