WHAT ARE THEY?

SIBERIAN TIGER

  • Are also called the Amur tiger
  • largest tiger species
  • Can grow up to 13ft in length and 700lbs
  • 1 of 8 tiger subspecies 3 of which are extinct and the other 5 endangered

WHERE DO THEY LIVE?

  • Southeast Russia
  • Northeastern China
  • Mongolia

HOW DO THEY LIVE?

  • Live in the mountains, away from humans
  • Avoid humans as much as possible
  • Live alone in their own territory
  • Very powerful and strong
  • Travel many miles to find prey
  • Hunt by stealth
  • Can eat up to 60lbs of meat in one night
  • Eat boars and deer

BABIES

  • The female can have a litter of 2-6 cubs
  • Females do all of the raising of the cubs
  • The cubs cant hunt for themselves till they are 18 months old
  • The cubs stay with the mother for 2-3 years before going off to find their own territory

WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?

  • Siberian tigers are critically endangered animals
  • There are only 350-400 left around the world
  • All but 35 of them are in captivity

POACHING

  • Endangered due to poaching and habitat loss caused by logging and development
  • Poached for fur and bones which are used in Traditional Chinese medicine, which is now illegal
  • A whole Siberian tiger can sell for up to $50,000 on the market

SAVE THEM?

  • To save the Siberian tiger population we need to stop logging and taking away their habitat
  • We also need to try to stop poachers that are killing the tigers for their fur and bones
