Hack: Standards Based Grading!

Grading that Measures Student Mastery

Traditional grading does not measure learning

Traditional Grading Can be Subjective

  • Assignments like returning a signed syllabus or class participation
  • An A in math is not the same as an A in PE
  • Based on a percentage system
  • Late or missed assignments result in a zero

Standards-based grading assesses student mastery of standards

Tools Needed for Standards Based Grading

  • A new grading Scale
  • Goals based on curriculum standards
  • Performance assessments based on standards
  • Forget about behavior, extra credit, grading for missed assignments
  • Teach curriculum that is standards aligned
  • Grade based on rubrics

Standards-based learning is not measuring the accumulation of points, it is measuring student learning!
