WHO IS MY EXPLORER?

  • Born April 30, 1770 London England
  • Dad died when he was two years old
  • Brother named John
  • Really good at math and science
  • Hudson's Bay Company visited his school and he worked for them for seven years
  • Married a Metis girl named Charlotte
  • Had 13 children
  • He died 1857 and was 87 years old and blind

WHAT DID MY EXPLORER DO?

  • David worked for Hudson Bay Company
  • He was known as one of Canada's greatest land geographers and map makers
  • He was a surveyor and mapped an area of 3.9 million km from Hudson Bay to Pacific Ocean
  • He was a good fur trader
  • Built trading post called Manchester house
  • He was the first European to find the Rocky Mountain pass to Pacific Ocean

WHEN DID MY EXPLORER GO EXPLORING?

  • Did most of his explorations between 1797 and 1812
  • Between 1797 and 1798, he joined the Northwest Company and mapped the US border
  • In 1807 he found a pass through the Rockies and set up trading post
  • In 1811 he followed the Colombia river to the mouth of the Pacific Ocean
  • In 1812 he finished map of Northwest Canada and the US

WHY DID MY EXPLORER GO EXPLORING?

  • Left England to get job with Northwest company
  • In 1807 he found a pass through the Rockies and set up trading post
  • The men of Northwest company needed him to map all of the trading posts
  • He also mapped the US border

HOW DID MY EXPLORER EXPLORE?

  • While exploring he traveled by canoe, horse, and used walking boots and snowshoes
  • He used many surveying tools to help him with his map making
  • He needed a telescope and a sextant
  • Sextant is an instrument for measuring distances between objects by using mirrors
  • He learned to speak Cree and Peigan to communicate with Indians

HOW THINGS CHANGED BECAUSE OF HIS EXPLORATIONS

  • Maps were created for the places he found
  • Many people began using these maps
  • He mapped 3.9 million kilometres
  • We now have a detailed route between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean

REFLECTION

  • He is a risk-taker because he left England when he was young to work for Hudson's bay company
  • Also a communicator because he created many new maps to help people know about places he found
  • He was an inquirer because he wanted to learn new languages
