OCR A2 Media Studies - You will need to answer two questions for section A of the exam. These questions will be based on your production work and your progression over the two years of study. To begin, choose one media production from either your AS or A2 year, and either a preliminary or main task.

List the key features

  • Genre

  • Media language
Section, Question 1B will ask you about ONE of your media productions. You will have to evaluate this in relation to a key media concept, which will be chosen from the following list-

Media Language

Under each heading list the features of your chosen media production, e.g. comedy genre, hybrid, conventional or alternative.

  • State whether your product adheres to...
  • or challenges these aspects
  • How does your product do this?
Now, adding to the previous headings, write whether your product adheres or challenges these aspects. Once completed, show how your product does this, e.g. subverts the conventional romantic comedy genre with a downbeat ending.

Research these theorists and apply them to your product
Application of key media theorists is central to gaining those higher marks. Research the following theorists and apply them to your product.

These media theorists have analysed areas including, genre, the auteur theory, the male gaze and narrative. Think about how your product either adheres to or challenges these theorists' views.

  • To be critical, not negative
  • You can use the PEE structure to ensure you evaluate
  • Research and apply key theories/terminology to enhance your answer

  • Does your product adhere or challenge conventions?
  • How does it do this?
  • Relate to previous media texts
Using all the material you have gained from the past activities, create an in-depth essay plan which outlines your answer.

Ask a member of your class to mark your essay plan and then mark their essay plan. See what tips you can gain from each other's work.
