PLATE TECTONICS

THEORY THAT PLATES GLIDE OVER THE MANTLE IN THE LITHOSPHERE

SLAB PULL

MOTION WHICH CAUSES SUBDUCTION

RIDGE PUSH

FORCE THAT PUSHES AWAY FROM THE MID-OCEAN-RIDGE AND CREATES NEW CRUST

DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY

TECTONIC PLATE BOUNDARY WHERE TWO PLATES MOVE AWAY FROM EACH OTHER

ON LAND DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARIES FORM RIFT VALLEYS

DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARIES IN THE OCEAN FORM THE MID OCEAN RIDGE

CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY

PLATE BOUNDARY WHERE TWO PLATES MOVE TOWARD EACH OTHER

When oceanic and continental crust converge they form volcanic arcs, like the Andes Mountains.

When two oceanic crust converge they form island arcs, like Hawaii.

When two continental crusts converge it forms uplifted mountains, like the Himalayas.

SUBDUCTION ZONE

THE AREA WHERE OLD ROCK IS PUSHED INTO THE MANTLE AND RECYCLED.

A deep ocean trench is the area where the ocean floor dips under the crust, like the Mariana Trench.

A transform plate boundary is when two plates slide past each other.

When plates move along transform boundaries it forms faults, like The San Andreas Fault in California.
