GROUP 1

  • Analyze Grendel’s conscious and unconscious desires in the novel, both the things he states he wants and the things you infer he wants.
  • Question: What did you learn about Grendel’s motivations and character? What are the effects of Grendel’s place in society?
  • Task: Represent his desires/thoughts through visual metaphors.

Group 2

  • Analyze the Dragon’s values and world-view.
  • Question: Why is the dragon the most frightening character in the book? How do his beliefs affect Grendel?
  • Create a visual metaphor to represent the Dragon’s beliefs and their effect on Grendel.

Group 3

  • Analyze the men’s value system.
  • Question: How do humans find meaning in life in Grendel?
  • Task: Represent their beliefs in a visual metaphor

  • Analyze Grendel’s relationship to human society.
  • Question: How does Grendel match the humans around him and how is he different?
  • Represent this relationship in a metaphor
