When Jeannette is getting a ride back to her house and the driver says that her dad is the town drunk. She is retort in defending her dad even though she knew he was right.
The kids had to defend their house when they were attacked by the neighborhood bully and they had to come together as family without their parents and fend for themselves.
Jeannette, Brian, Maureen, or Lori could have turned in their father or mother at any time because they were living in inhumane conditions and they could have had a much better life in foster homes.
When Lori goes off to New York she kept in touch with Jeannette and eventually they were able to get there whole family out to New York for a better life.
Even though Rex and Rose-Mary were not the best parents to their children they grew up tough and as soon as they had money in New York, they took their parents into their homes with open arms and gave them a place to stay.
