BEHAVIORISM

HOW DO THESE QUOTES RELATE TO BEHvIORISM?

  • The legacy of behaviorism: do this and you'll get that
  • The way positive reinforcement is carried out is more important than the amount-B.F. Skinner

WHAT IS BEHAVIORISM?

BEHAVIORISM

  • Human behavior can be based on external stimuli
  • The best behaviorist environment, where student behavior is shaped by arranging specific conditions for learning.

CHARACTERISTICS

"SHAPING A PERSONS BEHAVIOR BASED ON SPECIFIC REWARDS AND/OR PUNISHMENTS

CHARACTERISTICS/BASIC PRINCIPLES

  • Most behaviors are learned
  • Most behaviors are stimulus specific
  • Most behaviors can be taught, changed or modified
  • Behavior change goals should be specific and clearly defined

CHARACTERISTICS/BASIC PRINCIPLES

  • Behavior change programs should be individualized
  • Behavior change programs should focus on here and now
  • Behavior change programs focus on the child's environment

CURRICULUM

CURRICULUM

  • Not focused on curriculum itself but on the environment variables in the class
  • Each variable has an affect on the student

CURRICULUM CONT.

  • When environmental variables are in place, the students will learn in any curriculum place in which they are put because they are ready to learn behaviorally
  • Ex: discipline plan

INSTRUCTION

INSTRUCTION

  • To receive appropriate behavior from students based the established learning environment instructional methods must be applied
  • Methods can be observed and measured

EXAMPLES OF INSTRUCTION

  • Behavior contracts
  • Positive reinforcement
  • Negative reinforment
  • Punishment

TEACHERS ROLE

  • Center of instruction so learning can take place
  • Two main principles:
  • 1) identify expected behavior so both appropriate and inappropriate behavior are clear
  • 2) Create basic rules of conduct so behaviors translate

TECAHERS ROLE CONT.

  • Monitor classroom events
  • Timely and accurate responses to inappropriate behavior
  • Iep's: instructional education plAn; one on one monitoring/feedback

STUDENTS ROLE

  • Learn expected behaviors and follow them
  • Every student can modify/change behavior
  • Every student can Lear new behavior

KEY EDUCATORS

PAVLOV

  • he trained a hungry dog to drool at the sound of a bell.
  • If an external stimuli like a bell being ringing wouldcause the dogs to salivate.
  • Training the dogs to respond to the bell ended in what Pavlov said to be a conditioned stimulus and the dogs salivation was called conditioned response

WATSON

  • Argued that classical conditioning was able to explain all aspects of human psychology
  • Individual differences in behavior due to different learning experiences
