Leader - Israel and the Messiah are both often called servant. Israel, as God's servant, was to help bring the world to a knowledge of God. The Messiah, Jesus, would fulfill this task and show God himself to the world.

People- Isaiah 42:1-4 (NLT) “Look at my servant, whom I strengthen. He is my chosen one, who pleases me. I have put my Spirit upon him. He will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or raise his voice in public. He will not crush the weakest reed or put out a flickering candle. He will bring justice to all who have been wronged. He will not falter or lose heart until justice prevails throughout the earth. Even distant lands beyond the sea will wait for his instruction.”

Leader - James and John wanted the highest positions in Jesus' Kingdom. But Jesus told them that true greatness comes in serving others.

People- Mark 10:43-45 (NLT) But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Leader - Jesus was overwhelmed with compassionate pity for the people. His response echoes the deep inner mercy of God, often described in the Old Testament. Jesus came to be the Shepherd, the one who could show people how to avoid life's pitfalls.

People- Matthew 9:36-38 (NLT) When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.”

Leader - When Jesus called Matthew to be one of his disciples, Matthew got up and followed, leaving a lucrative career. When God calls you to follow or obey him, do you do it with as much abandon as Matthew? Sometimes the decision to follow Christ requires difficult or painful choices. Like Matthew, we must decide to leave behind those things that would keep us from following Christ.

People- Matthew 9:9 (NLT) As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and followed him.

Invitation Chorus

Meet My Need

Meet my need Lord, Meet my need Lord,
Meet my need just now.
I am waiting and Thou art coming to meet my need just now.

Lord, I will lift mine eyes to the hills

Knowing my help is coming from You

Your peace You give me in time of the storm
You are the source of my strength
You are the strength of my life

I lift my hands in total praise to You
Amen

We will see you next week

God bless you
