Microwaves are electromagnetic waves that, in a microwave, are produced by a device called a magnetron. A magnetron(the heart of the microwave) radiates the energy into the cooking cavity where it's absorbed by the food.
How else are microwaves used?
Microwaves have radar which is used for air-traffic control and vehicular speed-limit.
It is used for this because when an object is approaching the antenna, the radio waves are compressed and have a shorter wave lent and a higher frequency. By measuring this the speed of an object toward or away from the antenna can be determined.
