Operant Conditioning

Principles

  • Behavior that is positively reinforced will occur.
  • Information should be presented in small amounts so that responses can be reinforced. (Shaping)
  • Reinforcement will generalize across similar stimuli producing secondary conditioning.

Reinforcement = Key

  • Positive: Verbal praise, a good grade or a feeling of increased accomplishment or satisfaction (presented)
  • Negative: Any stimulus that results in the increased frequency of a response when it is withdrawn.

Possible Consequences

  • Something good can START or be presented so behavior increases.
  • Something good can END or be taken away, so behavior decreases.
  • Something bad can START or be presented so behavior decreased.
  • Something bad can END or be taken away so behavior increases.

Key Terms

  • Positive: Start or be Presented
  • Negative: End or be Taken Away
  • Reinforce: Anything that INCREASES a behavior - makes it occur more frequently, makes it stronger.
  • Punisher: Anything that DECREASES a behavior - makes it occur less frequently, makes it weaker.
