Ayn Rand was born in Russia on February 2, 1905. She grew up in the changing political landscape of Russia and graduated from Petrograd State University. Afterwhich she emigrated to the United States where she moved from manhattan to Chicago and eventually settling in Hollywood. At Hollywood, she had her first literary succes with the screenplay of Red Pawn. She then worked on Anthem and We the Living until 1940. During 1940 she wrote her first economically successful with the Fountainhead. She then became more active with her politics by testifying against the Soviet Union after the second red scare and by joining the Motion Picture Alliance for the preservation of American Ideals. Then she wrote her most famous novel Cloud Atlas. Afterwards she remained in New York and worked on spreading her philosophy and adapting her novels into a television programs until her death on March 6, 1982.

Her greatest work is Atlas Shrugged. However there is much controversy surrounding her true magnum opus. In today’s society, we favor her other famous work the Fountainhead. This is seen as many shows such as the Simpsons dedicate episodes to parodying her works. However she personally claimed Cloud Atlas was her greatest work. She says this because of the themes, plot and philosophies she puts into the novel. Within the book, the industrialists of a dystopian America go on strike. This leads to the corruption of the government to be exposed and the economy to collapse.

"I do not seek the good of others as a sanction for my right to exist, nor do I recognize the good of others as a justification for their seizure of my property or their destruction of my life." (Rand 78)

Objectivism is the belief that reality exists independently of man's consciousness. It also states that through the senses one can derive an absolute moral purpose by deciding what brings happiness.

Ayn Rand is very significant. She has helped form many young minds into thinking. Within her novels, she constantly discusses dystopian Americas caused by an exaggeration of an American fault such as American bureaucracy and the corruption within. Which helps people to find fault within ones government and realize a possible solution. She also helped many people turn to individualism in a time of collectivism. This is seen as many people were trying to live in a collective such as in Italy, Germany and the Soviet Union but Rand explained how self interest is morally right in her book the Fountainhead. Also she helped many people turn to Capitalism in a time of Comminism. She showed many beneficiary reasons, within her activism, as to why capitalism benefits not only society but also the individual as opposed to the folly with communism.

In my opinion, she is one of the most influential American author. Her works are very well written and are very relevant today. However in her time her works were as relevant but less appreciated. However I find great admirability in her boldness to write her works in a time of great strife, thus this bravery has been very influential in my own life.

Is Objectivism true?

In my opinion, Objectivism can not be true. I believe that one’s moral purpose is driven from God and not from one’s own happiness. I believe this to be true because if my happiness is the destruction of other’s happiness I am morally correct. Thus theoretically condoning the deaths of possibly billions.
