HUMANISM

  • The engraving of Knight, Death, and the Devil is an example of humanism because creating an engraving wouldn't get anyone to heaven. This engraving was an example of human action, showing someone who surpasses their human potential by doing something heroic.

"As I grew older, I realized that it was much better to insist on the genuine forms of nature, for simplicity is the greatest adornment of art."

MEANING

  • The older Albrecht got, the wiser he became
  • Began appreciating human nature as his life went on
  • Appreciated all of the little things in life

WHY VENICE?

  • Traveled to Venice and learned about perspective
  • Enlightened people back at home about perspective
  • Engraved an engraving using perspective where he learned it

ARTIFACT AND MODERN DAY

  • Affects the modern world because of the deeper meanings in the engraving.
  • Hourglass reminds people how precious and short life is
  • Tree roots show how fragile life is and how fast everything could fall apart

MODERN DAY

  • The engravings, and perspective (techniques) Albrecht Durer used, carried forward into modern times
