WHO WAS SIR FRANCIS DRAKE?

  • He was born in England in 1541.
  • He died in 1596 at sea and was placed in a lead casket.
  • His parents died when he was 12 years old.
  • He was very poor and lived in a tiny boat.
  • At 12 he learned to sail and wanted to be a sea captain, and he went sailing around the world.

WHAT DID SIR FRANCIS DRAKE DO?

  • In 1553 he went to sea.
  • In 1567 Drake brought slaves to the New World.
  • 5 years later Queen Elizabeth I was jealous of the great empire of Spain so she ordered Drake to rob Spanish settlements.
  • Queen Elizabeth was very happy with him so she knighted him.

WHERE DID SIR FRANCIS DRAKE DO HIS EXPLORING?

  • Drake's explorations took place mostly on the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, and Indian Ocean.
  • He travelled from England to the New Word, sent by Queen Elizabeth I to attack Spanish settlements.

WHEN DID SIR FRANCIS DRAKE DO HIS EXPLORING?

  • Drake started exploring in 1553.
  • In 1567 Drake brought slaves to the New World.
  • In 1572 he attacked the Spanish settlements, seaports, and ships.

WHY DID SIR FRANCIS DRAKE GO EXPLORE?

  • Queen Elizabeth I was jealous of Spain's wealth.
  • She ordered Drake to attack Spanish settlements so that England could claim them as their own.
  • Drake also loved sailing and the sea.

  • Drake explored by using ships, crossbows, arrows, knives, swords, and a compass.
  • He needed a big supply of food and fresh water to survive.
  • He used lots of guns and lots of cannons and a telescope.

HOW DID THINGS CHANGE FOR SIR FRANCIS DRAKE AND THE WORLD?

  • Sir Francis Drake was the first English navigator to sail around the world. In three years he travelled nearly 58, 000 km.
  • He increased our knowledge of the earth and its plants and animals.
  • He discovered California which led to more British settlements in North America.
  • Drake sold gold for slaves in Africa.
  • He was the first one to sail from England to Africa.

  • I think my explorer was loyal because he did what he was told by Queen Elizabeth I, but he was not very not caring because he killed people in the Spanish settlements.
  • He was open minded because he helped defeat the invaded Spanish Armand in 1588.
  • He explored the Pacific Ocean by being open minded and a risk taker.
