The Red Wheelbarrow, a poem by William Carlos William, was written in 1923. It is a modernist poem, written in the imagist style of poetry. William used few words and created a very strong visual image in the mind of the reader. He was inspired to write the poem by an African American man who lived near him. In this poem he is illustrating the man's life which is based on providing a living by working the land, often in difficult conditions yet he still finds beauty in the life. This was typical in the 1920's as the African american population of this country continued to move beyond the life of slavery.
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,is a poem written by Robert Frost in 1922. He creates a very clear image using simple words and traditional wording. During the beginning of the 20th century, many people were moving to the cities and leaving the rural areas of the country. This is illustrated in the first stanza of the poem, where Frost talks about the land that is owned by someone who lives in the village. The poem shows Frost's love of nature and the deep, dark woods, and how as much as he would like to, he cannot stay there but must continue home to his responsibilities.
