The Colossus of Rhodes
A statue 105 feet tall built by the sculptor Chares. It was finished in 280 B.C.E. But was destroyed by an earthquake in 226 B.C.E. It was built to celebrate Rhodes victory over Cypress. It was supposed to resemble the Greek sun god Helios.
It was located in the city Rhodes on the island Rhodes of Greece in Europe
The hanging gardens of Babylon
A structure seemingly made entirely of green. It is said to be made by King Nebuchadnezzar II in 600 B.C.E. It is located by Baghdad Iraq. Built to please Nebuchadnezzar's Queen. It was said to be located in Babylon closer to present day Hillah, Babil Province Iraq. The only evidence of this wonder are some scriptures if it did exist it must have been destroyed sometime after A.D.
The Great Pyramid of Giza
This 65 million ton wonder is the oldest and the least damaged of them all. It was built by the Pharaoh Khufu. Located near El Giza Egypt. It was finished in 2560 B.C.E. There are three known chambers one is cut into the bedrock but is unfinished. The other two chambers are higher up which are the king and queens room. It was the tallest structure for 3,800 years. Some pharaohs are buried in this pyramid or in the other two pyramids.
Statue of Zeus
The statue was constructed by Phidias the artist. It started on 466 B.C.E. but finished in 435 B.C.E. in Olympia, Greece. It was built to honor the greek god Zeus. It lay inside the temple of Zeus to worship him. The statue was destroyed during the 5th century A.D. When Rome later conquered Greece Suetonius, their leader ordered all statues of Greek gods be destroyed and to replace them with statues of him.
Temple of Artemis
This temple was built by Chersiphron and his son. It was built to honor the Greek goddess Artemis. It was rebuilt three times after being destroyed two times. The first time was in the 7th century B.C.E. because of a flood. The second time it was rebuilt it was about 4 times larger. The other time was an act of arson and was again rebuilt for the last time. It is located in Selçuk,Turkey, Asia.
Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
This building was about 45 meters in height and was designed by Satyros and Pythius of Priene. It was a tomb built between 353 and 350 B.C.E. After it was built it was such a feat they declared it an ancient wonder. Between the 12th and 15th century it was destroyed by a succession of earthquakes. There are few remaining artifacts from it today. The generic meaning of mausoleum is above ground tomb. As it was built to be Mausolus's tomb whom built it.
Lighthouse at Alexandria
It was built by the Ptolemaic Kingdom between 280 and 247 B.C.E. It was over 400 ft tall being one of the tallest man made structure for a period of time. Badly damaged by earthquakes between 956 and 1323 and was later abandoned in ruins. It was located in Alexandria, Egypt, Africa.
