James was a self-taught artist who started drawing at a young age. As a child he loved drawing his favorite characters such as Snoopy and Yogi bear. James earned a college degree in engineering, but eventually was able to go to work full-time as an artist, selling his art to art festivals around the Southeast. Around 1999, he began drawing his cat, Pete. He turned his love for cat's into his lifetime work. His first book published was "The Misadventures of Pete the Cat." This was published in 2006. This book was a history of his artwork. In 2008, he illustrated his first self-published book, "Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes."

Kim is a children's author, artist, and yoga enthusiast. She is best known for being a NYT bestselling author and co-parent of children's book character, Pete the Cat. In 1998, she left the governors press office to pursue her dream of art. She opened her first art gallery in 2003 and says that work is like going to kindergarten every day. In 2004, she started collaborating with James on the book series, "Pete the Cat." In 2013, her first book was published, "Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses." Not only has she authored several of the Pete the Cat books, she has now started her own series called, "Willow and Oliver."
