A linking verb is a verb that connects the subject of a sentence to the complement. It is sometimes called a copula or a copular verb.

(linking verb) copula: an equating verb (such as `be' or `become') that links the subject with the complement of a sentence

EXAMPLES

  • William is excited about his new job.
  • He appears upset about the death.
  • The eggs smell rotten.
  • He went red after tripping on the rug.
  • Your plans for the wedding sound nice.
